After reading about seven different thinkers in class today, Mr. Dees would like you to take on the identity of two of these people. You will then write a short conversation between the two thinkers.
EXAMPLE:
Adam Smith: "I believe that the best way to solve problems is to let the market take care of itself."
John Stuart Mill: "Well hello, Mr. Smith. You have some clever thoughts, but clearly the market will not solve all of our problems. The government has to help!"
It would then continue on....
In your conversation, each person MUST speak 2-3 times!

Charles: Not true. it would be the same as a privatley owned factory only the government will be overwatching it and make sure it will not fail.
Adam: But a professional would do a better job than a government official and would know when to do what needs to be done.
Charles: True, but with all factories under government control, we would be able to know what's high in demand and problems would be swiftly and easily dealt with.
Adam Smith: I strongly believe, as a professor, that liberty in the economy will lead to much progess.
Charles Fourier: Well that can be true, however, a new economic system must be produced.
Adam Smith: oh, and why is that?
Charles Fourier: It is simple to say our fine government is capable to plan our economy.
Adam Smith: I can say that I have my opinion and you have yours. But I can also say you are wrong because people can work for their own good with competition and the government should should in no way interfere.
Charles Fourier: This free-market nonsense is terrible. I will not tolerate talking to you any longer. Good-bye.

Charles Fourier: Well I beleive in sharing profit allowing everyone to lean on their neighbor and in turn their beighbor can lean on them.
Adam Smith: Thats wrong what can you gain then if your neighbor is an alcoholic who never works?

Charles fourier: If people take complete control, there will be too much chaos. The government keeps things in order.
Adam Smith: IF a person owns the factory on his own they will know exactly what needs to be done because he is right there monitoring the factory. The government just over looks everything and does not know what each factory truly needs.
Charles Fourier: That is a good point but without government enforcement you will not know what product is in demand. The government can give the factory that information to make sure they dont fail.
Adam Smith: Im through with your nonsense ideas and refuse to talk t you any longer.
Adam smith: I believe in a free economy of free markets where the government should not interfere.
Charles Fourier: Hello Adam. I am Charles and I believe that socialism is a way to offset the ill effects of industrialization. And I think that we could come together in a group and community and rely on others.
Adam smith: Well, I believe that we should all fallow the law of competition and see who is the fittest to make a better product.
Charles Fourier: That’s funny because I completely disagree with you! I think that the factors of production are owned by the public and for the welfare of all. We should plan an economy than have free-market capitalism!
Adam smith: My natural laws of economics are far more intelligent and thought out more than yours. Including my law of supply and demand where enough goods would be produced at the lowest price to meet demand in a market economy.

Adam Smith: I believe in three natural laws. The law of self-interest, the law of competition and the law of supply and demand
Charles Fourier: What are you talking about? I believe the public should own the factors of production and operate for the welfare of all.
Adam Smith: That doesn’t make any sense! In order to have a successful economy there has to be competition! It is not productive nor is it beneficial to have everyone equal!

Thomas Malthus: Capitalism is the way to go! In order to survive in this world, we need to make a profit that only goes to one sole person, our self. One man for himself!

David Ricardo: Why thank you for asking, I feel that wages will be forced down as the population increases.
Thomas Malthus: I couldn’t agree more, because of the population’s rapid growth; most are destined to be poor and depressed due to food shortages.
David Ricardo: Exactly, and thus, we have a permanent lower class because the food they cannot afford is distributed among the wealthy.
Thomas Malthus: It is clear to me that these food shortages are caused by the decreasing amount of wars and epidemics, with fewer deaths due to war and illness, the population increases and there is not enough food to go around.
David Ricardo: This is a brilliant theory, I shall write a book on this very topic.

Adam: I think we should share the idea of a free economy and free markets. We should follow my three natural laws of economics.

Adam Smith: I believe that the people should work for what they want to work for and the government should stay out of it.
Charles Fourier: ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The people don't know anything! There should be a government that would plan out the economy.
Adam Smith: Your socialism crap doesn't help anyone! The people are human and they should be allowed to make what they want to make and for whoever they want to.
Charles Fourier: WHAT! If the people do that then they will never bring themselves up from poverty. The government has to control factories, workers, etc. so that it could help end poverty and promote equality.

Adam Smith: But then there would be no progress, because the government would be holding back everyone that is trying to gain success.

Adam Smith: I think that this would lead to the governments’ wrong doings and they would take to much control of their power.

Charles: In a free market that a company can control what is going on in a market, which can be good or bad. How do you think that wages will determine how people will work.
David Ricardo: People will work slower and less for wages which will equal lower wages.
Adam Smith: Hey John how does it feel that you're points are a lost cause and everyone knows my leadings to socialism with Thomas and David were correct?
John Stuart Mill: That is completely false! You are accountable for people leading deprived lives and sometimes leading to starvation, you are a skidmark to the underpants of society! (everyone laughs)

John Stuart Mill: (wipes his face) You're a child! Yes I agree that you did change the way the business world was run, but it was changed incorrectly. Workers are working VERY long hours on minimum wage and barely get to see there family that they're doing all of this for and barely getting by!
Adam Smith: Nonsense! I set up business' to receive profits and I allowed workers to work for their own good! Workers come up to me and kiss the ground I walk on, and I curse the ground you waddle on!
John Stuart Mill: You're laws set up may have been descent but you led that into capitalism which I question with every inch of my body!!

Adam Smith: I beleive that people should work for themselves and the govternment should not interefere.
Charles Fourier: Well i beleive the exact opposite, I think that we should all come together, govternment included, and run the business's that way.
Adam Smith: That is stupid! People would make much more money if they could run their own company! the economy would besuch better off.
Charles Fourier: Well what happens if one person is doing bad? we can come together and help them. My solution will help everyone in need.

Thomas Malthus: I believe that there are to many people in this blasted city and to keep the population in check and consistant with the food supply we MUST have wars and epidemics to kill off people

Adam Smith: What is so good about socialism?
Charles Fourier: I think that it will end poverty. What does capitalism do for the economy?
Adam Smith: It does many things such as competition will lead to a better product and enough good will be produced at the lowest possible price.
Charles Fourier: Do you really think that that will work?
Adam Smith: It has a better chance of working than your ideas.
Thomas Malthus: I strongly believe natural laws have to govern economic life!

Jeremy Bentham: People have rights to pursue their own happiness, and almost killing them reluctantly with wars is not a right thing you know.

Jeremy Bentham: Government should try their best to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
Adam Smith: Mr. Mathus, people should not have their lives handed to them. they should earn their living and potential luxuries!
Thomas Mathus: But we need some systen to regulate how much each person should make for their family.
Smith: on the contrary! Ecanomic liberty shall cause progress indeed!
Mathus: no no no you baffoon! capitalism is surely the way to go. look at how the population rises so rapidly. our food supply simply cannot keep up.
Adam Smith: In this world, competetion is a necessary component in order to have well-made products.
John Stuart Mill: In such competition some make money and some lose money, which is morally wrong.
Adam Smith: People only work for their own good, and with all working together and sharing wages, products will be poorly made and there would be far less motivation. Making people share their wages is like punishing success.
John Stuart Mill: What about those who work hard for their wages and recieve little pay? Is it fair that hard work doesn't always pay off?
Adam Smith: The world needs new and innovative ideas to advance economically, and those ideas are where money is made. Fair wages should be paid, but not equal wages to all.
Thomas Malthus: “I think we need capitalism.”
Charles Fourier: “No socialism is the best answer.”
Thomas Malthus: “Capitalism will make us richer faster.”
Charles Fourier: “Okay well everyone will be equal with socialism.”

John Stuart Mill: In our world today we need equal wages so all can benefit.
Adam Smith: When people work for their own good everyone benefits in the form of a better product.
John Stuart Mill: Why should hard work be punished by a low wage?
Adam Smith: Why should the people who come up with creative ideas that make a better product be punished by sharing their wages?
